PETALING JAYA: The nine PKR MPs must be prepared for the possibility that their action calling for a Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into judicial affairs could trigger the fall of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s administration, says Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Abdul Karim.

In a strongly worded statement, Hassan described the demand, led by former Economic Minister Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli, as having serious political consequences, effectively turning Anwar, who holds constitutional powers over judicial appointments, into a key suspect if the RCI proceeds.

“Without that, the call by the nine MPs not only damages Anwar’s image but also places the PKR president ‘under the guillotine’, akin to what was seen during the French Revolution,” said Hassan in a statement on Tuesday (July 8).

From a democratic perspective, Hassan admitted the MPs’ actions could be seen as a healthy check in a parliamentary system.

“Politically, however, it marks a rare direct revolt against a sitting party president and prime minister — an unprecedented development in PKR.

“Have the nine MPs fully considered the long-term national interest and the ideals of genuine reform?”

“If their answer is yes, then it is clear that an internal rebellion is taking place within PKR,” he said

He added that forming an RCI requires agreement from the Prime Minister and the Cabinet.

As Anwar returns from an overseas trip, Hassan urged the Prime Minister to address the matter wisely and decisively, stressing that the issue of judicial integrity is not a small one.

Despite the turmoil, Hassan reaffirmed his personal support for Anwar, vowing to stand by the Prime Minister and the unity government.

“I still have faith in Anwar Ibrahim’s leadership and will defend his position as Prime Minister,” he added.
