While traditional language assessments often focus on written and reading comprehension, effective communication for competitive exams and professional settings increasingly requires strong listening and speaking skills.
Due to lack of practice and exposure to activities testing their listening and speaking skills, students face difficulties when facing interviewers and group discussion segments for competitive exams including CUET UG, UPSC and CAT. As group discussions and personal interviews (GD and PI) have become an integral part of the selection process for prominent universities and jobs, check these strategies to excel in these areas by focusing on effective communication skills:
Take the lead and prepare well: Before you start a group discussion, you need to have a clear objective, agenda, and expectations. It is critical to research the issue, prepare relevant questions, and anticipate possible challenges or conflicts. Take the lead during the discussion, as it will give you an upper hand on the topic and allow you to guide the discussion smoothly.
Mindful and active listening: Mindful and active listening is more than just hearing what someone says; it is about paying attention, showing interest, and responding appropriately. One can practice this method through the various online platforms available. Techniques such as paraphrasing to summarize what someone said in your own words showcase your understanding of the topic and that you are following the conversation.
Communicate effectively and structure your conversation: Speaking with clarity is crucial to getting your point across and creating a positive impression. Structure your arguments with a definite beginning, a body comprising relevant research data, and a conclusion. Avoid complex conversations by managing your time wisely and staying on track with the discussion agenda. Also, it is advisable to be the first to summarize the discussion. Prepare index cards if necessary to organize your thoughts and ensure you cover all key points effectively.
Respectful engagement with other participants: Many times, participants in the group discussion present their ideas aggressively to create an impact on the group. Be respectful towards the other participants and their opinions. We are citizens of an increasingly multicultural industrial world where new identities are emerging every day. As an aspiring professional and scholar, inculcating tolerance and global sensibilities is of utmost importance.

Therefore, going the formal and professional way is always the right choice to leave a great impression.
Build confidence by practicing at home: Build confidence through systematic desensitisation. Dedicate 15 minutes daily to reading aloud from books or articles. Practice speaking in front of a mirror once a week to enhance articulation and thought organization. With continuous practice, you will notice your public speaking skills improve drastically.
