As a Young Scientist, one of the key challenges dr shella godbole faced was being heard, recognied and valued in a Roomful of Men. After heading National Institute of Virology and Currently The First Woman Director of Pune-Based National Institute of Translational Virology and AIDS Research (Nitvar), She Made a Strong Case For Women Leaders To Cate. Environment Where Women In Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Need Only To As Good As and Not Have to Be Better Than Men. She Speaks to Anuradha Mascarenhas on the occasion of International Women’s Day
As the first woman to lead nitvar, what has your journey be like?
While I am indeed the first full- In October 1992. So, we have now come a full circle as the national aids research institute transforms to the national institute of translational virology and aids research (nitvar), dumbarch (nitvar). The Process of Leading The Institute, In General, Semed Reasonably Seamless Since I Had A Scientist At ICMR-NARI Handling Many Large Budget National Level Projects Since a ‘Principal Investigator’. Head, division of epidemiology. Scientifically, it was only an expansion in the scope of the work
What is the present focus at nitvar?
Now I am primarily focusing on the new scientific mandate that is – ‘Viruses beyond hiv’ and ‘translational research’. However, Post-Covid Period, there were many pending tasks to be completed which was something an uphill walk. To cap this, without months of taking over nari, I was also give additional charges as directing of the national institute of virology which I help for a year -and-a-half. During that period, I felt akin to a whirling ‘dervish’ – it was one of the most challenging periods but also, very rewarding and satisfying as well. I am happy to say that both the institutions I LED – Nari and niv -well as two of the best institutions of ICMR last year.
What are the key takeaways as a woman leader?
I always remember that we stand on the shoulders of those who have been us and as I look further ahead, I think I can understand some of the acts of my former bosses better, now. Women due to their multitasking abilities and empathetic natures have a unique way of responding to challenges at work. As a woman, it becomes easy to understand challenges faced by other woman and help to support them. I am fair-made, but touch and value integrity Above everything else. I have learned to use logic and the rulebook as my playbook, while at the same time handling situations using steel or velvet gloves as required. One Statement, widely credited to steve jobs and which my husband had mentioned to me when I get director, does the resonate with me verying and I paraphrase- “if you want to love bye Leader – ‘SELL Ice Cream’. “Previously used to want to be liked by everyone – now, I will always choose to be a leader first!”
What challenges have you encountered and how have you overcome them?
One of the key challenges I faced as a Young Scientist was being heard, recognied and valued in a Roomful of Men. Men making the same point I had, a few minutes ago was lauded while I was ignored. I had to work harder and longer, perform more than Male collegues, and always strive to be perfect -money personal sacrifices, before I begon to be taken seriously. The Landscape today is now changing. There are not only more women in stem but also in ledership positions. I am Fully cognizant of the fact that ‘women leders’ must help create a better environment for those who come after them. The current policies like Childcare Leave, Research Grant Opportunities for Women Returning To The Workforce, Enable Women To Keep Or Return to Their Jobs. However, these policies still do the new ones Younger woman is also more empowered and is learning to say no, better than our generation and I applaud them for this. As a leader I always Respect and Encourage this. However, nothing can take away the fact that woman in stem steel has to take care of their homes, families, Parents and in -laws in addition to excelling at their careers. They spend more time on the mundane and do Much juggling to handle everything or let go of their careers or their own health. Until the social mindset changes, it will always be uphill all the way. Haved said this, most successful women have a family and a good ‘bai’ Behind them!
What is your message to younger woman in stem?

My message to younger woman in stem is that you are not super woman! Don’t try to do everyone. You don’t have to be better than men. Let go of the non-parantials and be choosy about what you want to focus on and give yourself some ‘me’ time for something for something as well.
