After a marathon run of the seven-phase Lok Sabha elections 2024, all eyes are on poll verdict day on Tuesday (June 4). Ahead of the counting day, both the BJP and Opposition-led INDIA bloc knocked the poll panel’s doors. The INDIA bloc approached the EC asking it to follow established procedures during counting of votes on June 4. Soon after, The BJP complained about “grave and coordinated attempts by opposition parties, led by the Indian National Congress, and certain motivated civil society groups to undermine the integrity of the ongoing electoral process”.

The Opposition’s appeal to the poll body on Sunday to ensure that counting of postal ballots is completed first stems from a change in the EC’s guidelines in 2019. We explain why the EC tweaked the guidelines after the 2019 polls.
