The sad but unfortunate fact is that we are all hooked to our smartphones. These handheld devices are more than just a medium of communication. We reach out to them to check the time, locate a place, set an alarm, book tickets, watch content, plan and deliver projects – you name it, the phone helps you do it. But this increased screen-time can have adverse impacts on health, and coming out of this digital loop may seem daunting.

In a recent episode of the Liz Moody podcast, the host shared a technique that claims to help individuals overcome their smartphone addiction in just about six minutes, further helping them enhance their concentration levels by 68%. “A study found that reading for only six minutes reduces stress by 68 percent- this combination of reducing stress and strengthening our attention networks will help rewire our neural pathways that will help break the habit of sticking to our phones in the future,” she said.

This 2009 study conducted by David Lewis, a cognitive neuropsychologist from the University of Sussex also pointed out that reading a book “is more than merely a distraction but an active engagement of the imagination as the words on the printed page stimulate your creativity and cause you to enter what is essentially an altered state of consciousness.”

Intrigued, we decided to ask an expert and get more clarity.

According to Dr Ravi Kumar CP, Consultant – Pediatric Neurology, Aster CMI Hospital, Bangalore, the relationship between technology and cognitive function is complex, and understanding how to mitigate the negative impacts of excessive phone use is crucial for improving mental clarity and focus.

The benefits of reading on cognitive processes are well-documented, with numerous studies indicating that engaging with written material can significantly enhance brain function. “Reading not only stimulates the mind but also fosters critical thinking and comprehension skills. It has been shown to improve vocabulary and knowledge retention, which are essential for effective communication and learning,” he said.

As individuals strive to lessen their dependence on digital services, Dr Kumar shared that incorporating reading into their daily routines can serve as a beneficial alternative that promotes mental well-being.

How often should you read?

When asked what is the ideal duration one should spend reading every day, Dr Kumar said that the ideal amount of time one should dedicate to reading each day varies depending on individual preferences and goals. However, it is generally recommended that you aim for at least 30 minutes to an hour of reading daily to reap the cognitive benefits associated with this activity. “This duration allows for deep engagement with the material, facilitating better understanding and retention,” he added.

By prioritizing reading over screen time, he believes that people can cultivate a healthier relationship with technology while simultaneously enhancing their concentration and overall cognitive abilities, nurture a hobby and open their minds to creative pursuits.
