KLUANG: A group of teenagers have been arrested by the police for stealing a motorcycle in broad daylight.

Kluang OCPD Asst Comm Bahrin Mohd Noh said the five of them, aged 13 until 18, were arrested in Kampung Bukit Batu and Felda Bukit Batu in Kulai between 7pm and 10.30pm on Wednesday (June 5).

“We believe that they were involved in stealing the motorcycle at Jalan Sutera 1, Taman Mewah in Layang-Layang here at around 2.30pm on Monday (June 3).

“They stole the bike so that one of the suspects could use it,” he said in a statement on Thursday (June 6).

He added that four of the suspects were still in school while the fifth one had finished secondary school.

ACP Bahrin added that the suspects underwent a urine test and tested negative for drugs.

They also do not possess prior criminal records, he said, adding that they were placed under remand until June 8 for investigation under Section 379A of the Penal Code for vehicle theft.

Upon conviction, the offence is punishable with seven years of imprisonment or a fine, or both.

Earlier, a 59-second video clip of the alleged theft made rounds on social media.

In the closed-circuit television footage, a group of people could be seen arriving at the scene on motorcycles.

One of them got off and looked at the two motorcycles that were parked in front of a row of shops before pushing one of the bikes away from the area.
