Three days after the Lok Sabha election results were declared, SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal, along with wife and Bathinda MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal, Friday started a thanksgiving tour in Bathinda parliamentary constituency.
The tour came amid rumblings of leadership change due to poor Lok Sabha results in which 10 out of 13 Lok Sabha candidates of Shiromani Akali Dal lost their security deposits.
Harsimrat is the only SAD candidate who won and the only woman MP from Punjab this time and also the only one to have secured a fourth-time victory in the Lok Sabha polls in the state. Her opponent, state Agriculture Minister Gurmeet Singh Khudian from AAP, lost from his own village of Khudian.
The tour started from Badal village where the SAD president said, “We need to understand what is right for our state. The SAD will continue to fight for the rights of Punjab and I appeal to the people to strengthen the regional party. The SAD alone can meet the aspirations of Punjabis.”
Clarifying he has “no greed for power”, he said, “In fact, Badal Sahab wanted me to take oath as chief minister in 2012 when the SAD government was repeated but I refused. Similar occasions came later but I was resolute that Badal Sahab alone should lead us. I will continue to serve you and I wholeheartedly respect the verdict given by the voters.”
The couple went to other villages of Lambi constituency which was represented by former CM Parkash Singh Badal. In the 2022 Assembly elections, Badal senior was defeated by AAP candidate Gurmeet Singh Khudian from Lambi with a margin of more than 11,000 votes. In the 2024 Lok Sabha polls, Khudian was the candidate and this time Harsimrat got a lead of over 23,000 votes from Lambi.
The SAD president said, “We are thankful to you for fighting this election (Bathinda Lok Sabha) as your election. I feel you were angry at why Badal Sahab lost from this constituency in 2022 and wanted to make amends.”
Harsimrat thanked the people for reposing faith in her. “My victory is also a tribute to Parkash Singh Badal. The people of Lambi, where the SAD has led in almost every village, have given a befitting reply to those who were trying to spoil Badal Sahab’s legacy.”
She detailed how the SAD’s vote share had increased by 10 percent in Bathinda Lok Sabha constituency and it had won five Assembly segments. She also explained how the AAP had come at number three in Bathinda Urban and the Congress had come last in all nine Assembly constituencies.
However, overall, the SAD vote share fell to 13.42% while the BJP’s vote share increased to 18.52% in Punjab.
She alleged that the AAP and the Congress had colluded with each other in a bid to defeat her and were even joined by the BJP.
Asserting that the Delhi-based parties wanted to destroy the SAD because they wanted to rob the state of its waters and deny it its capital city, Harsimrat said “the SAD is committed to fighting for justice for farmers by striving to make MSP a legal right. ”.
She said that Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann had lost the mandate to govern the state with the AAP receiving a drubbing in the parliamentary polls. “He should resign forthwith.”
Harsimrat also attended thanksgiving programs at Budhlada and in Bathinda Rural and Bathinda Urban constituencies Friday.
Meanwhile, in a post on X, Harsimrat said that the new government at the Center should focus on addressing grievances of the farmers and fulfill the promises made to them. “I urge union govt to focus on farmer grievances and fulfill the promises made. No one should be allowed to label Punjabis as atankwadi or ugarwadi and fan communal divisions. Punjabis are foremost patriots, serving the nation on the borders and as food providers. We deserve better,” Harsimrat said, in an apparent reference to remarks by BJP’s MP-elect from Mandi Kangana Ranaut.
